I went to the farmers market today and this time got a ridiculous but delightful splurge - duck eggs! I'd never had them but noticed a few vendors there offering them so I looked up some info on them, and treated myself to a half-dozen.

Here's one of them next to a chicken egg.

One of the sites I checked said that duck eggs make really good scrambled eggs, so I had one scrambled with a bit of salt for breakfast. Tasty, but not noticeable different from a high-quality chicken egg.

For dinner, though...

Rice vermicelli with a soft-poached duck egg. Not only are they larger than chicken eggs, but the yolk is larger in proportion. So for any dish where you want a nice runny yolk, there's a decided advantage. They'd be fabulous for shakshuka.

But the flavor isn't markedly different, and at $6 for a half dozen I can't really justify the expense. But I definitely enjoyed trying them.

I think MT Supermarket sells quail eggs - maybe I'll give those a try.
