All the shippy NuWho stuff on Tumblr got the wheels turning in my head, and as I lay awake my insistent thoughts meandered to the subject of Doctor/companion shipping in general. And oh yes, I have many thoughts on the subject, and yes, I am going to share them.

I haven't watched enough One, Two, or Six lately to really have decent thoughts on potential 'ships there, and I haven't really gotten into the expanded universe stuff, so I'll stick with what I have a better handle on. And of course I ship Doctor/Master in their dysfunctional epic glory across the centuries, but that's not really relevant here.

So... MY HEADCANON. LET ME SHOW YOU IT.

I think he and Liz might have flirted casually, but I can't see them having done anything about it. I think Jo might have made a move on him and been gently, regretfully, but firmly rebuffed. And for some reason I think Benton had some idle fantasies that were strictly wank fodder and nothing he'd ever have acted on. I really liked Three's chemistry with Sarah Jane and I could have seen something developing there if he hadn't regenerated so soon after they met.

I know Four/Sarah Jane is a popular ship, and I've read some good fic of them and enjoyed it, but I'm not sold on it, and I really don't think there was anything physical between them. I can totally see Leela tackling him for keyed-up "let's celebrate still being alive" post-adventure sex, but I think after the first time he would have fobbed her off with a vibrator. That is, when she wasn't pouncing the locals (and I would love some Leela/Madame Vastra/Jenny fic!); she seems like a woman with a strong sex drive and no qualms about getting her needs met. I think Romana I might have teased him to get ego-boosting attention without any intention of acting on it, but I totally ship him with Romana II. I shipped Four/Romana II before I knew what shipping was. I think her decision to stay behind at the end of WARRIOR'S GATE devastated him.

And here's where I lose a bunch of Classic Who fans... I don't ship Five with any of his companions (although again, I've read and enjoyed fic). I think something might have developed between Four and Nyssa, or that something might have developed between Five and Nyssa if they'd traveled alone together. As it is, I think he'd have subtly tried to nudge her towards Adric or Tegan. I could have seen him having a fling with Peri if they'd had more time together.

I can't ship Mel with anything but a ball gag. I think she's my least favorite companion. His relationship with Ace was clearly a mentor-protege one and I don't see them having a conventional romantic relationship, but I could totally get behind a sort of mild D/s demisexual relationship. Kind of like Chris Parker and Robin in Laura Antoniou's THE SLAVE; she never even saw him with his clothes off, but he would bring her off manually or with deliciously high-tech toys or have her masturbate in front of him, talking her through it with that charming accent of his. And of course, she wouldn't be allowed to come without his permission.

Can't give a fair rundown on Eight, of course, for reasons already given. And now we come to NuWho...

I don't think Nine was in love with Rose, or vice-versa, but I could totally get behind them being friends-with-benefits, and adding Jack to the mix just added to lots of vigorous, fondly friendly sex in various combinations. YAY FOR RECREATIONAL FUCKING!

Oh, what a hot mess. Yes, I think he and Rose were romantically attached, and that he tried to fight it. Possibly leading to less sex. Which makes me feel sad for Rose, even though I'm mostly pretty meh towards her. Past that, well, RTD shoved the relationships into the foreground with Martha's one-sided attraction, and I honestly think Ten was at least subconciously basking in being desired even if he had no intention of returning her affection, which is a serious dick move. I think he might have slept with Jack if they'd had more time together, but not as anything more than friends with benefits. And even if it hadn't been rammed repeatedly down our throats, I can't see him and Donna as anything but friends.

I don't think there's any room for subtext here. Moffat focuses on relationships even more than RTD did. In all honesty, I'm sick of it. I like having stuff left for the viewers to interpret and play around with. I'm pretty lukewarm towards River as a character, but her story arc makes me cringe. Her relationship with the Doctor is pathologically unbalanced; he is literally the focus and center of her life. And I really don't think he's in love with her, I'm not even sure he loves her as a friend. Their wedding was a flat-out manipulative act on his part. It makes Edward and Bella look like a healthy couple. ELEVEN, I AM DISAPPOINT.

Ok, you can start throwing rotten tomatoes now.
